For the first time, The Literacy Alliance decided to bring the delightfulness of words to our community in a way that our schools, local, state, and national community leaders could get involved. The purpose of the Favorite Word Project was to have people from around the community identify their favorite word, explain why it was their favorite word and draw it on canvas. Though a word is the same for all people, each individual sees that word differently for many reasons, which might include is are not limited to: book definitions, the social environment, its meaning(s), interaction and expressions with others of that word.

The Perfect Word project involved two groups: schools and leaders/celebrities. Schools in the Muscogee County District chose one word to describe their school and picked a child to draw the meaning of that word on a canvas. Our local, state, and national leaders and celebrities chose their word and had the option of drawing it on canvas themselves, have a MCSD student draw it, or work with a MCSD students to.gether. All canvases were auctioned off at our Favorite Word Gala in December. Thanks to all students, family, friends, school representatives and local leaders who came out to support this exciting event.

Look for our next word-to-canvas project "It's All About Words" in spring 2010!
