About Us
History
In 1999, Muscogee County, Georgia became the FIRST community
in Georgia to achieve the status of Certified Literate Community.
The Literacy Alliance unites providers and learners in the Chattahoochee
Valley to increase literacy levels of all ages. Located in Muscogee County we work closely with the Muscogee County School
District to facilitate two programs: Kindergarten Readiness and The Dictionary Project. Also, we combine efforts with other
agencies who provide literacy services, promote the importance of having the ability to read, and bring to the awareness of
others the problems and risks associated with low literacy levels.

Our Staff
The Literacy Alliance is operated by two staff members (one full-time
and one part-time) and an exceptional Board of Directors. Barbara Moushon, Executive Director has been with us since 2003. Julie
Jordan joined THe Literacy Alliance in the fall of 2009 and serves as the Volunteer Coordinator/Administrative Assistant.

As Executive
Director, Barbara Moushon aids our community by serving on many Boards. Barbara is serving in a second term as chair
of for the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce’s "Partners In Education" (PIE). This program is dedicated
to improving education by community/business involvement within our public schools. She has served on the Troup County Teacher
of the Year Selection Committee and is the secretary for the Professional Association of the state Certified Literate
Community Program (CLCP). Also, she has been recognized as 2009 Leader of Distinction and for her five years of service
in Georgia's CLCP. Barbara's personal commitment and dedication to our community has made her a great asset to have as our
Executive Director.
